Report: Warwickshire v Glamorgan (a), Rothesay County Championship Day One

Warwickshire rolled Glamorgan for 69 all out inside one session to take control on the opening day of an important Rothesay County Championship fixture at both ends of the table.

Ethan Bamber took all of Glamorgan’s first five wickets to finish with scintillating figures of 5 for 28 – supported by Ed Barnard’s effective five over spell, returning 3 for 5. Bamber passed 50 wickets for the year in the process, only behind Kyle Abbott in the seasonal tally.

Glamorgan’s remarkably unremarkable effort with the bat, down to a combination of poor batting and impressively disciplined new ball bowling, was their lowest score since being bowled out for 60 against Middlesex in 2007.

In response, the visitors made the most of batting before 4pm to end the day with an 85-run lead at 159 for 3. New Zealander Will Young rectified some struggling form since coming to the midlands county with 60 in the day’s proceedings.

Despite play unable to start until 1:30pm due to morning rain, Kiran Carlson chose to bat first on what looked a pitch that would bring no concerns to the batters across four days.

It took just four balls to bring concerns as debutant Jack Hope-Bell was the first of three ducks. Instantly brought into action from Asa Tribe’s three on the day’s first ball, the debutant survived an LBW shout from Bamber before being bowled from a bamboozling delivery that nipped away.

Carlson equally fell victim to a seamer’s dream delivery as wickets came in nearly every over for Bamber. His removals of Tribe and Ben Kellaway were down to poor discipline more than the new-ball bowler’s own expertise; Kellaway drove a wide delivery to point to make it 9 for 3 before Tribe fended well outside off stump as Colin Ingram attempted to offer stability.

South African veteran Ingram dispatched any loose balls offered with a short boundary on one side but even the only man to make double figures in the first innings could only make 19, bowled the delivery after an overthrow allowed him on strike to complete the five-for in 6.5 overs.

Every bowling change captain Barnard made turned to gold as Glamorgan’s usually reliable tail wasn’t allowed to wag for just their fourth sub-100 score in the County Championship since their title win in 1997.

Things could get no better for Glamorgan as embarrassingly it was shown that the pitch did have little in it to cause such a catastrophic collapse. Young, along with Rob Yates, notched up a 65-run partnership before the latter attempted to deftly sweep Kellaway’s off-spin. The first wicket subsequently fell just four runs short of the hosts’ total.

Young made the most to take apart each of the four bowlers used when they strayed off line or length, including smashing a Kellaway short ball into Tribe’s helmet at short-leg which saw him off the field for some time late in the day before returning.

Even when Mir Hamza picked up the day’s final wicket of Young with seven overs to play, the chop on proved no product of impressive bowling making the difference in a one-sided affair.
