England at Edgbaston: Chasing down India

Resuming a rearranged fifth Test with the series on the line, Ben Stokes' side were set an imposing target of 378 – a total that would have required a record fourth innings chase for England. Against one of the world's best bowling attacks, it looked a daunting task.

Instead, England produced one of the most remarkable run chases in their Test history.

Hundreds in the first innings from Rishabh Pant (146) and Ravindra Jadeja (104) had propelled India to 416, before Jonny Bairstow (106) kept England in the contest by responding with a century of his own.

Trailing by 132, England dismissed India for 245 in their second innings, setting up a mammoth chase at Edgbaston. England needed 378 for victory.

Alex Lees (56) and Zak Crawley (46) got England off to the perfect start, putting on 107 for the first wicket. However, 107 for one quickly became 109 for three, which brought Bairstow and Root to the crease.

Bairstow continued his sensational form by making 114 not out – his second ton of the match. At the other end, Joe Root compiled an unbeaten 142 as the pair combined in a match-winning partnership of 269 – England's highest fourth-wicket stand in the fourth innings of a Test.

It would go down as the second-highest run chase in England’s Test history. The victory also sealed a 2-2 draw in the series after England had trailed 2-1 when the final Test was postponed from the previous summer.
