Brookes is set to miss an extended period of the 2026 season after breaking his thumb playing for Worcestershire at the end of June, and with a timeline for his return unknown, the Phoenix were quick to snap up Montgomery who is enjoying his best Vitality Blast campaign to date with the bat.
A right-handed batter and off-spin bowling option, Montgomery has scored 243 runs at an average just above 30 for Derbyshire in this year’s Blast, registering two 50s and a career-best unbeaten 74 in their season-opener against Durham.
The 26-year-old is closing in on 1,000 runs in the Blast across four seasons after spending three years with Nottinghamshire before joining Derbyshire ahead of the 2026 campaign.
This will be Montgomery’s first season playing in The Hundred. Tickets are selling fast to opening night against Trent Rockets. Birmingham Phoenix Head Coach Shane Bond said: “We’re delighted that we’ve been able to add a player of Matthew’s quality.
“He gives us another option with the ball and he can be a match-winner with the bat. He’s striking at over 150 in this year’s Blast, so he’s a dangerous player when he gets in, and that’s something we’re looking forward to seeing.
“It’s obviously disappointing to lose Ethan, and we’re all wishing him a fast recovery.”
Montgomery will be available for Birmingham Phoenix’s opening The Hundred game of 2026 as they entertain Trent Rockets in a double-header at Edgbaston Stadium on Friday 24 July.
