World Champions League 2024: Edgbaston in talks to host legends cricket event

Edgbaston is in discussions to host a brand new global tournament next summer – the World Champion’s League (WCL) – which would rekindle some of the fiercest, most entertaining rivalries in international cricket.

It’s proposed the T20 competition will consist of retired and non-contracted players from the six major powerhouses of world cricket: England, India, Pakistan, Australia, West Indies and South Africa.

If given the go ahead, it is expected to attract some of the biggest names in world cricket, and will feature some of the game’s greatest rivalries including India v Pakistan, last staged at Edgbaston in 2017 during the Champions Trophy.

The WCL has been developed by Zabawa Entertainment, a Bollywood film and music media production company based across India and Dubai.

Harshit Tomar, Director of Zabawa Entertainment, is the man behind the exciting project.

He said: "The WCL is set to be bring back the India Pak rivalry of yesteryear stars and also reunite the greats from England, Australia, South Africa and West Indies.

“England has always been the home of cricket, and when it comes to Birmingham, it is home to many Indians and Pakistanis as well.

“We are looking forward to deliver 10 days of Cricketainment to fans globally.”

Approval is subject to scrutiny by the ECB who have a process for reviewing proposed tournaments to ensure they are delivered professionally.

It is also subject to release of Warwickshire’s domestic fixture schedule in later this year.

The proposal would see bigger group games, semi-finals and final will be played at Edgbaston with some group games at other grounds around Warwickshire.

Stuart Cain, Chief Executive at Edgbaston, added: “We’ve staged some of the biggest games in world cricket and it will be great to see some of the heroes involved in those games back at Edgbaston.

“However, we have to be mindful of the workload on ground staff and ensure that this doesn’t detract from producing good quality wickets for Warwickshire and England which is why any final decision is subject to the domestic schedule and ECB’s approval.”
