Pakistan player in focus: Mohammad Rizwan

As we build up to their highly anticipated visit, we’re highlighting some of the key players from their 17-player squad set to tour the country. This week, it’s the turn of the experienced Mohammad Rizwan…

An incredibly experienced wicketkeeper-batter, Rizwan is one of the senior members of the Pakistan squad set to tour England, so he will be looking to lead by example.

Rizwan is a world-class operator across all three formats of the game and has totalled over 250 appearances for his country since making his ODI debut back in 2015.

The 34-year-old is now closing in on 9,000 runs for Pakistan, with over 2,500 of those coming from his 43 Test starts to date. He has recorded a century for his country in all three formats.

Only mentioning his batting would do him a disservice though, with his contribution behind the stumps equally as impressive. He has been directly involved in 312 dismissals in his time across Tests, ODIs and T20s.

At the beginning of his international career, Rizwan found himself out of favour between 2016 and 2019, but when he returned, he made sure of his place. A 95 in Brisbane in his first Test since being recalled got him off to a good start, but it was Pakistan's tour to England where he truly cemented his spot as Pakistan's first choice wicketkeeper. A pair of half-centuries in Southampton, combined with a near-perfect series behind the stumps, and Rizwan was soon appointed as the vice-captain of the Test side.

While this will be his first experience of Test cricket at Edgbaston, Rizwan’s only ODI at the stadium was a positive one for him personally. He struck an impressive 74 off just 59 balls back in 2021.
