MCC Coventry Under 13 Boys clinch national title after Lord's triumph

MCC Coventry under 13s won at Lord's when they beat their Sheffield counterparts on the Nursery Ground this past weekend

MCC Coventry under 13s emerged triumphant on the Nursery Ground at Lord’s on Saturday as they beat their Sheffield counterparts by 38 runs to win the national competition.

Warwickshire Cricket Foundation works with the MCC to run four hubs across two different venues in the county which enables young cricketers to train and play matches.

The MCCF National Hubs Programme offers free annual coaching and opportunities to participate in matches to more than 7,000 state-educated girls and boys.

Within those hubs are competitions such as the one MCC Coventry's boys clinched the title of at the Home Of Cricket this past weekend.

It is a competition which has run for a number of months over the course of the season and which, to begin with, involved more than 200 teams. The finals day on Saturday also involved a boys' under 15s final, won by West Kent, while the girls' under 17s final was won by Bradford.

MCC Coventry had beaten Worcester and Stoke in the Midlands finals earlier this summer and then advanced to the southern finals, where they also battled past their West Kent equivalents and then Dulwich.

Proceeding to the final, they met Sheffield in the capital and, having been put into bat, they posted a highly competitive total of 139/9 from their 20 overs.

This was in no small part thanks to the knocks of Muhammad Hashim, who hit 44 and who was ably supported by contributions from Gabe Hattersley (28) and captain James Williams (23).

Defending 140, Coventry reduced Sheffield to 33/4 in the chase; Hashim finished with figures of 2/14 to complement his innings with the bat, while there were also wickets for Williams, Etienne Black and Ethan Johnston.
