Booth targeting early wickets on day two at Edgbaston

Michael Booth says Warwickshire will be targeting early wickets on day two of their Rothesay County Championship game against Sussex at Edgbaston Stadium, with the game evenly poised after a rain-affected opening day.

Having opted to bowl first, the Bears struggled to make early in-roads against a Sussex side that are also hoping to mount a title challenge, however Booth struck twice in three overs to reduce the visitors to 99 for three before rain curtailed play early.

The right-arm quick is now hoping the Bears can continue to take wickets before piling on the runs, with the weather set to improve over the next three days.

“We thought that we were a bit unlucky to start off with,” he said. “There was quite a few inside edges and outside edges that flew to the boundary.

“We thought we probably could have had them five down if everything went our way, but that's how it goes sometimes.

“If we keep bowling tight, we'll get our rewards, whether that's in the first session or after lunch. We know if we keep hitting the top of off, there's enough in the pitch to help us hopefully get them out and then pile on the runs.”

Booth, who due to injury last played in First-Class cricket back in May, was delighted to be back playing County Championship cricket alongside a bowling unit that impressed in the 30 overs that were played on the opening day.

“There were a few nerves because I haven't played a County Championship game for about three or four months,” he added.

“It's nice to be back playing and back bowling, and I felt like those three overs were good. I'm very happy to be back and back contributing to the team.
