Warwickshire and Sussex are locked in a fascinating battle at Edgbaston after a bowler-dominated second day left the Rothesay County Championship clash finely poised.
A superb collective effort with the ball saw the Bears dismiss Sussex for 156 in the morning, Chris Woakes leading the way with four for 36 and Michael Booth claiming three for nine.
Sussex's seamers responded strongly as Warwickshire were bowled out for 161, but important lower-order contributions from Booth (34 not out) and Ethan Bamber (24) ensured the Bears secured a valuable five-run first-innings advantage.
Booth then struck twice with the ball as Sussex reached 84 for three at the close, an overall lead of 79, to leave everything to play for heading into day three.
Sussex resumed on 99 for three but Warwickshire quickly took control during an outstanding morning spell in which the visitors lost five wickets for just three runs in 17 balls.
Woakes was at the heart of the damage. The England all-rounder trapped James Coles lbw before having Charlie Tear and Fynn Hudson-Prentice caught in the slips.
There was no respite at the other end, with Bamber having John Simpson caught at first slip before sending Jack Carson's off stump cartwheeling.
Olly Hannon-Dalby then found Henry Crocombe's edge for a catch behind, and although number 11 Jaydev Unadkat counter-attacked with two sixes, Booth wrapped up the innings when Sean Hunt edged behind.
Warwickshire lost Zen Malik early in reply but Rob Yates and Dan Mousley steadied the innings to take the score to 65 for one.
Sussex then enjoyed their best spell of the day as Crocombe removed Mousley for 29 and Will Young before Hunt found a productive rhythm.
The left-armer accounted for Yates for 25 and Ed Barnard before removing Alex Davies and Woakes with successive deliveries as the Bears slipped to 97 for seven.
Vansh Jani battled hard for 14 before a fine Tom Haines catch at third slip off Unadkat left Warwickshire 102 for eight.
The Bears' lower order responded impressively.
Booth and Bamber added a crucial 37 for the ninth wicket, with Bamber making 24 from 32 deliveries before picking out long leg off Crocombe.
Booth continued to counter-attack alongside Hannon-Dalby, the pair adding another 22 to edge Warwickshire ahead before the innings ended on 161. Booth finished unbeaten on 34 from 45 balls, completing an excellent individual contribution after his three wickets earlier in the day.
Warwickshire then made the perfect start to Sussex's second innings when Bamber trapped Daniel Hughes lbw with the first ball.
Haines and Tom Clark rebuilt with a 49-run partnership, but Booth returned to ensure the Bears finished the day strongly.
He had Clark caught behind for 22 before Tear pulled to mid-wicket, leaving Sussex 84 for three at stumps.
With Haines unbeaten on 32 and Sussex's advantage standing at 79, the contest remains wide open ahead of what promises to be another intriguing day at Edgbaston.
