Five of the best Ashes moments at Edgbaston

The Men’s and Women’s Ashes both return to Edgbaston Stadium in 2027 as part of a huge summer of cricket in Birmingham.

2005 Men's Ashes: The greatest Test

Arguably the greatest Test of all time took place in 2005 at Edgbaston, with the winning moment one of the most iconic in the history of the Ashes. Australia nine wickets down, needing three runs to win. Steve Harmisson bowling 90mph at Australia’s number 11 Michael Kasprowicz. A bouncer. A glove. A diving Geraint Jones. Cue wild celebrations as England levelled the series 1-1. Ashes moments don’t get better.

1981 Men's Ashes: Botham brilliance

Rather than one moment, how about five? Known as Botham’s Ashes, in 1981 ‘Beefy’ produced when it mattered as England proved too good for Australia. At Edgbaston Botham was at his best with the ball. Australia were 105 for five chasing only 151 and were seemingly favourites to win. Botham then took control, bowling Rod Marsh before trapping Ray Bright in front. Dennis Lillee was next to go, caught behind, with Martin Kent and Terry Alderman then bowled by Botham to earn England a famous 29-run win. Botham would finish with figures of 14 overs, nine maidens, five wickets for just 11 runs.

2023 Women's Ashes: Final-over thriller

A record crowd of 19,527 for a women’s fixture at Edgbaston were treated to a thriller in the first T20 of the 2023 Women’s Ashes. England registered 153 from their 20 overs, and Australia were well-placed to chase it with ease at 130 for two, needing 24 from the final 20 balls. Two wickets in two balls by Sarah Glenn at the end of the 17th over altered their chase. When Lauren Bell then dismissed Ellyse Perry with the score on 140, the visitors required 14 from nine. Beth Mooney had other ideas though, ending unbeaten on 61, she guided the visitors to a famous win with one ball remaining.

2023 Men's Ashes: Crawley’s cover drive

As far as memorable moments go in the Ashes, Zak Crawley’s cover drive off the first ball of the first Test at Edgbaston in 2023 will take some beating. After all of the build-up, and Ben Stokes and Brendan McCullum’s talk of playing positively, Crawley walked the walk, dispatching Australian captain, Pat Cummins, to the cover boundary with an emphatic drive. While Australia would win another classic at Edgbaston by two wickets, Crawley dealt the first blow of the series.

2005 Men's Ashes: Flintoff’s over

While Harmison took the crucial final wicket in the 2005 Test, Andrew Flintoff provided one of the great Ashes overs earlier on in the innings. Australia were 47 for no wicket chasing 252 when Flintoff was introduced into the attack. Around the wicket to Justin Langer, the Australian chopped on to his stumps second ball, bringing captain Ricky Ponting to the crease. A huge LBW shout first ball was turned down by umpire Billy Bowden then a thick outside edge that fell short of gully followed the next ball. Another LBW appeal next ball, then a no ball from Flintoff. Bowling 90mph, Flintoff nipped the next ball away from Ponting who went hard at the ball, edging behind to Jones. It was an over that altered the course of the Test.
