Last outing

The Bears are looking to bounce back against Somerset after falling to a second successive defeat in the competition last time out against Notts.

A first List A hundred from George Garton helped rescue the Bears as they scored 282 all out against the Outlaws, however three wickets from the returning Jake Lintott couldn’t stop the hosts in their chase. Notts were just above the required rate throughout, and despite the Bears taking seven wickets, they reached the total with nine balls to spare.

Previous meeting

This is the 43rd meeting between Warwickshire and Somerset in 50-over cricket, with Somerset leading the head-to-head record with 22 wins to Warwickshire’s 17. That doesn’t tell the story of recent meetings though, with the Bears having won four of the last five.

When the two teams met last year, Warwickshire edged a thriller in Taunton. Somerset batted first and set the Bears 310 to win after Tom Lammonby struck a century and James Rew made 81. In reply, several players made contributions for the Bears. Rob Yates hit 47 at the top of the order, before Zen Malik and Hamza Shaikh both scored 44.

Somerset took wickets at key times though, and when Kai Smith and Jake Lintott came together at the crease, the Bears were six wickets down still needing 67 to win. Smith’s unbeaten 45 and Lintott’s half-century would see the Bears to the winning mark though, seven wickets down and with three balls remaining.

When Garton came in against Notts, Warwickshire were in trouble at 68 for four. His counter attacking 117 came from just 101 balls and saw him raise his bat for his maiden List A hundred. That innings helped the Bears to a competitive total. Speaking afterwards, Head Coach Ian Westwood said, “I thought it was a brilliant knock in the circumstance of losing early wickets, not just to go on and get 100, but just how freely he scored seemingly without taking risks.”
