Warwickshire Cricket Foundation delivers prostate cancer testing day at Four Oaks Saints Cricket Club

Warwickshire Cricket Foundation (WCF) once again offered free prostate cancer testing to men over the age of 50 from across Warwickshire and Birmingham on Friday.

In partnership with the Bob Willis Fund, the charity named after the legendary Warwickshire and England bowler who sadly passed away with prostate cancer in 2019, 45 men signed up to attend the testing which took place at Four Oaks Saints Cricket Club and ran throughout the day.

Men over 50 are at increased risk of prostate cancer. One in eight men get prostate cancer, a statistic which increases to one in four if you are black - all men over 50, then, are being encouraged to ensure they are tested in order to reduce those numbers.

For each of the past six years, Edgbaston has turned Blue For Bob during an international matchday, a day which has been dedicated to raising awareness and highlighting the important work of the Bob Willis Fund; to date, over £2m has been raised to help finance research into prostate cancer.

Last year, over 200 men from Warwickshire and Birmingham were tested for prostate cancer through WCF, in union with the Bob Willis Fund, having set up centres at local cricket clubs in the county including Sutton Coldfield CC, Knowle and Dorridge CC and Stratford-upon-Avon CC.

"Early detection can save lives, so it's been fantastic to see 45 men come forward for testing," Esther Lau-Mackaay, WCF Community Engagement Project Officer, said.

"What's been especially encouraging is that many were prompted to book by friends, showing that more men are having open conversations about their health.

"If events like this help start those conversations and encourage more people to get tested, then we've achieved something really important."

On the same day, and at the same venue, WCF’s Summer Cricket Camp concluded.

The Foundation has set up camps throughout the summer holidays across the county, from Bournville to Kineton and Moseley to Solihull Blossomfield - also on the list is Four Oaks.
