T20 Finals Day: Iconic moments at Edgbaston

Edgbaston Stadium has become the home of Vitality Blast T20 Finals Day, and in 2027 will be on hosting duties for the 15th successive year.

Edgbaston became the official home of Finals Day in 2013, ten years on from the competitions inaugural season, and in the 14 years since, huge hitting, dramatic finishes, fancy dress and a packed Hollies Stand have become synonymous with one of the best days in the domestic cricket calendar.

Here are five of the most iconic moments…

Woakes holds his nerve

It would be remiss not to include Warwickshire winning the T20 title at their home ground as one of the most iconic moments. In 2014, Chris Woakes held his nerve in the final over to see the Bears to a four-run victory over Lancashire.

Faced with the prospect of bowling at the destructive Freddie Flintoff, Woakes did enough to make sure of wild celebrations at Edgbaston.

Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff was always a player for the big occasion on the pitch, however as part of Finals Day in 2017, he took centre stage in a different way.

Performing a rendition of Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline dressed as Elvis Pressley, Freddie took a tumble in front of the Hollies to a huge ovation.

One man show

Arguably the most complete performance from a cricketer on Finals Day came in 2013, when David Willey single-handedly led Northamptonshire to the title.

The all-rounder produced with both bat and ball on a memorable day at Edgbaston. Opening the batting, he struck a blistering 60 off just 27 balls before returning with the ball, taking outstanding figures of four for 9 off only 2.3 overs as Northants beat Surrey by 102 runs.

The no-ball final

The tightest final in Blast history came in 2022, with Hampshire earning a one-run win against Lancashire. There was drama right until the last ball.

Lancashire needed four off the final ball, however a no-ball with the final delivery of the game kept any celebration at bay. Lancs held their nerve though when the final legitimate ball was bowled, as they edged a classic.
