Singh Nahal scores match-winning century in white-ball decider for Warwickshire Academy in Namibia

Warwickshire CCC academy player Arjan Singh Nahal scored a century against the Namibia Academy to lead the Bears to victory in the decider of a three-match white-ball series.

The boys academy is currently touring Namibia and has played three 50-over matches against the country’s academy, comprised of a mixture of Namibia A and U19 players, before finishing the tour off with a two-day fixture over the weekend.

Singh Nahal scored 101 off 118 balls, hitting five sixes to carry Warwickshire to a very competitive 263/8 off their 50 overs.

The match went right down to the wire with Eddie Miller taking the last wicket with the final ball of the penultimate over to win the match for Warwickshire by four runs.

In the first match, Warwickshire cruised to a 15-run victory, but Namibia hit back with a comprehensive win of their own, racking up a sizeable 341/5 off their 50 overs, running out winners by 98.

That left it down to the third and final fixture to find out who would take the bragging rights in the closely fought head-to-head.

In the end, it was Singh Nahal who produced the telling and decisive contribution to ensure Warwickshire took the three-match series 2-1.

The academy left for the tour on 11 February and has played the 50-over matches at the Namibia Cricket Ground, which was recently one of the hosting venues for the U19 World Cup.

Boys Academy Lead Josh Cobb said: “It’s been great to get to Namibia, a place that none of us has been before, and it’s good for the new tourists to come and experience some challenging conditions with the heat and high altitude.”

“We’ve been so well looked after, the facilities are top draw. They have a new high-performance centre, two grounds, dressing room, gym, the works.

“It’s been a very competitive series and the last match was a bit of a thriller. Arjan scored a fantastic hundred, but there have been some great glimpses from all the players throughout the series.

“It’s been good seeing the lads challenged, and to see them take some of the work-ons from the winter out into the middle.”

They will contest the Namibia Academy in a two-day red-ball fixture at the same ground starting on Saturday 21 February, before returning to the UK on 23 February.
