Rothesay County Championship: The run in

All eyes will be on the Rothesay County Championship over the next two weeks, with Warwickshire in contention to lift their first Division One title in five years.

The Bears, Somerset and Nottinghamshire are separated by just five points at the top of the table, and with two games remaining, we’re taking a look at how things currently stand and who the three teams vying for the title will play over the last two weeks of the season…

Current standings

Somerset currently top the table on 189 points from their 12 matches, recording six wins, two losses and four draws so far this term.

Defending champions Nottinghamshire are in second place, four points off top spot on 185 points. They have five wins, a solitary loss and six draws.

Warwickshire are in third place, five points behind Somerset and one behind Notts, on 184 points, with an identical record to Notts through 12 games.

Form guide

Warwickshire head into the final two fixtures of the season playing their best cricket of the campaign. Since four-day cricket returned, they’ve won three and drawn one of their four games, with the draw coming against Notts. They have also recorded back-to-back wins in their last two games, with both coming by an innings.

Similarly, Somerset have also picked up back-to-back wins heading into the penultimate fixture, and have been equally as impressive in doing so. They toppled Glamorgan by an innings and 64 runs in Taunton before easing to a 377-run victory over Leicestershire.

Notts’ last two games have seen them draw against Leicestershire before they eventually get over the line against bottom of the table Hampshire. They didn’t have it all their own way, however their bowling attack, led by Olly Stone, earned them a 54-run win on the final day.

Remaining fixtures

Warwickshire travel to Essex first up, before they entertain Leicestershire in the season finale at Edgbaston Stadium from Thursday 24 September. Be there to support the Bears.

Although not in the race for the title, Yorkshire could have a huge say in where the trophy ends up. Both Somerset and Notts will play the Headingley outfit over the last two weeks of the season.

Somerset travel to Leeds to take on Yorkshire first, before they entertain Surrey on the final week of the season, with Surrey battling for survival in Division One.
