Warwickshire closed out their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign with a four-wicket defeat to Durham, despite an excellent unbeaten century from Katie George.

The Bears made 279 for eight after being put into bat, with George’s second century of the season underpinning the innings after a positive opening stand between Nat Wraith and Chloe Brewer.

Durham lost early wickets in pursuit of 280, but captain Hollie Armitage responded with her ninth List A century and, supported by a half-century from Bess Heath, guided the hosts towards victory.

With neither side able to qualify for the One Day Cup knockout stages heading into the fixture, Warwickshire were looking to finish their campaign on a high after Durham won the toss and elected to bowl.

Openers Wraith and Brewer gave the Bears a strong start, putting on 79 for the first wicket. Both were handed an early life, with Harriet Robson and Trudy Johnson dropping catches off Lauren Filer, before the partnership passed fifty inside the powerplay.

The aggressive Wraith was eventually dismissed by Mady Villiers for a fluent 48, caught at mid-off, before Brewer was trapped lbw by Katie Levick and Brooke Halliday was run out as Durham fought back.

George and Charis Pavely then joined forces, with George taking the initiative as she passed fifty for the sixth time this season.

The pair continued to build before accelerating during the latter stages of the innings. England seamer Filer hit back by removing Pavely, Sophie Beech and Em Arlott, but George remained at the crease to bring up her second century of the campaign.

Eleanor Larosa added the wickets of Mary Taylor and Alexa Stonehouse, while George finished unbeaten as Warwickshire posted 279 for eight and set Durham 280 to win.

The hosts’ chase got off to a difficult start as Stonehouse removed Danni Collins, aided by an excellent catch from George, before striking again when Robson pulled to a fielder on the leg-side boundary.

Phoebe Brett then removed Villiers, caught at mid-on, but Durham skipper Armitage held firm and moved to a composed half-century.

Armitage was joined by Thompson and the pair added fifty before Arlott made the breakthrough for Warwickshire.

Heath then joined her captain and the pair steadily reduced the target, with Armitage going on to register her second century of the season and Heath passing fifty.

Hannah Baker eventually dismissed Armitage and Pavely removed Heath late on, but Durham reached 280 for six to seal a four-wicket victory as Warwickshire brought their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign to a close.
