Warwickshire secured a convincing 45-run victory over Surrey at Edgbaston in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.
Ed Barnard was the driving force behind the victory. Released for the game by Sunrisers Leeds, the Bears’ club captain struck a superb 140 from 130 balls to propel his side to 341 for four. Vaansh Jani (66 not out from 45 balls) and Zen Malik (58 from 73) provided valuable support.
Surrey replied with 296 all out as Warwickshire’s bowlers completed an impressive all-round performance. Dom Sibley struck 74 from 80 balls against his former team-mates and Josh Blake added a polished 71 from 57, but the visitors were left needing 99 from the final ten overs. Olly Hannon-Dalby led the Bears’ attack with five for 60.
On Surrey’s inaugural List A visit to Edgbaston, on 6 July 1969, they put Warwickshire in and bowled them out for 86. This time, after Surrey again chose to field first, the Bears breezed past that total for the loss of just one wicket in the 16th over.
Rob Yates skied Ryan Patel’s fourth ball to mid-wicket, but Barnard quickly took control, racing to a 54-ball half-century which included 40 runs in fours and sixes.
Malik followed with a fluent fifty from 63 balls, while Barnard remained imperious, bringing up his sixth List A century from 99 deliveries. The second-wicket pair added 147 in 25 overs before Malik edged out of his crease against Tom Ealham and was smartly stumped by substitute wicketkeeper Alex Dodson, who had replaced the injured Blake.
Tom Lawes, also released by Sunrisers Leeds, eventually removed Barnard, caught at deep extra cover. Jani ensured the Bears maintained their momentum, reaching his half-century from just 34 balls as Warwickshire posted an imposing 341 for four.
Surrey’s reply started solidly as Sibley and Patel added 52 from 63 balls before the latter dragged a pull from Ethan Bamber onto his stumps.
Brilliant fielding from George Garton then accounted for the next two wickets. A direct hit from cover ran out Adam Thomas before Garton produced a diving catch at point to dismiss Rory Burns and give 16-year-old Charlie Taylor, making his home debut, a deserved first List A wicket.
Sibley passed fifty from 59 balls but, with the required rate climbing, he slogged Hannon-Dalby to deep mid-wicket.
Blake kept Surrey’s chase alive with an attacking 71, but when he lifted Barnard to mid-wicket the visitors were left requiring a significant contribution from their lower order.
Lawes struck 40 from 31 balls and landed some powerful blows, but his dismissal effectively ended Surrey’s hopes. Garton held his nerve with an excellent catch on the cover boundary off Hannon-Dalby, who went on to complete his five-wicket haul as Warwickshire sealed a 45-run victory.
