Report: Warwickshire v Hampshire (a), Rothesay County Championship Day Two

Rob Yates’ first century of the season boosted Warwickshire’s Rothesay County Championship title credentials, as Hampshire suffered another chastening day.

Opening batter Yates produced a passive and sensible innings to underpin a great Warwickshire batting performance – with Sam Hain scoring 90 and 21-year-old Kai Smith firing out a half-century.

Kyle Abbott celebrated his 50th wicket of the season – the first player in Division One to the landmark this season – but his four for 51 was a rare high point for Hampshire.

The relegation-threatened county lost six wickets to trail by 328 at the end of day two – with Indian spinner Manav Suthar and fast bowler Olly Hannon-Dalby both picking up two wickets each.

After only 41 overs were possible on the first day before rain intervened, Warwickshire were keen to ram home their 141 for one advantage.

Dan Mousley and Yates were both seemingly on course for hundreds after battling through a tricky new ball spell, having sat on half-centuries overnight.

But Mousley was squared up and turned around by Abbott, edging to third slip, to hand the South African his 50th pole of the season.

It is the third season in a row that Abbott has picked up a half-century of wickets, with this the seventh time since permanently joining Hampshire in 2017 that he has managed the tally – the other two seasons still brought 44 and 46 scalps.

Yates had scored five fifties in the Championship this season, but with scores in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, he had failed to convert any of them – although he did reach three figures in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

There were moments during his innings he looked undefeatable, although he had one major battle: whether he could reach his ton before lunch.

He began the last over before the interval on 98, and after three dot balls and a single he was off-strike with two balls to go. But Sam Hain returned the strike, and he was able to find a gap in the covers to reach his 12th first-class century.

The second new ball – which was due eight overs after lunch – was a crucial milestone for Hampshire, but they managed to get a head start when Andrew Neal kept one low and dislodged Yates.

Abbott then struck with the third delivery on the new cherry to find a tickle off Vansh Jani’s bat behind to Ben Brown, before he castled the top of Ed Barnard’s off stump.

Hain produced his standard crisp hitting best to keep the scoreboard growing at a decent rate, although he earned two lives.

He edged two balls to first slip – on 32 and 50 – but was third-time unlucky when he pushed Neal to Toby Albert, as unlike Yates he fell in the nervous nineties.

Kai Smith took up his mantle with a classy half-century – his fifth – but Hampshire were able to wrap up the tail within eight overs.

Abbott pinned Chris Woakes for his fourth, Ethan Bamber edged Neal behind, while James Fuller nicked off Smith and Manav Suthar as Warwickshire were bowled out for 398.

Hampshire had 23 overs to bat out but lost six wickets to fall deep behind the eight ball – in both the match and their hopes of survival.

They came out with a mantra to bat with a tempo and not get too bogged down, but that didn’t help their ability to eat into the visitors’ total – especially with the Warwickshire attack apparently unable to miss their target.

Ali Orr was lbw in the fifth over, Nick Gubbins was bowled playing a reverse sweep, and Jake Lehamnn edged Woakes to first slip.

Ben Mayes, Eddie Jack and Toby Albert fell in three successive overs as an innings defeat became the favourite result.
