Report: Bears Women v Surrey (h), Vitality T20 Women’s County Cup

Surrey, 200/6, beat Warwickshire, 190/6, by ten runs.

Warwickshire Bears Women fell agonisingly short of a place in the Semi-Finals of the Vitality T20 County Cup, as they lost by ten runs in a thrilling clash against Surrey at Edgbaston Community Sports Ground.

Having won the toss, the Bears opted to bowl first, however it was Surrey that got off to a fine start, with Aylish Cranstone (53) and Kira Chathli (56) both striking half-centuries as the visitors reached 112 for one inside 11 overs.

Cranstone eventually fell to the bowling of Mary Taylor, before her twin sister Millie dismissed Chathli as the Bears halted their progress.

Amu Surenkumar picked up one for 23 from an impressive four overs, while Hannah Baker (1-47) and Phoebe Brett (1-23) also picked up a wicket apiece, as they held Surrey to 200 for six from their 20 overs.

In reply, Warwickshire lost Meg Austin early, but a counter-attacking partnership between Davina Perrin and Nat Wraith kept the Bears in the contest.

Wraith was the first of the pair to fall, but not before she could strike 41 off just 20 balls in an innings that included four fours and three sixes. Wraith, whose wicket came in unfortunate circumstances when she was run-out backing up, departed with the score on 74 in the eighth over.

Perrin fell for 42 off 34 balls as the score surpassed 100, which saw Charis Pavely join Katie George at the crease.

George, captaining the side, continued her good form, ending unbeaten on 54 off 35 balls, but despite cameos from Pavely (23 from 20) and Surenkumar (16* from eight), the Bears fell ten runs short in their chase.

Bears Women return to Metro Bank One Day Cup action on Wednesday 26 August when they take on The Blaze at Edgbaston Stadium. Play gets under way at 10:30am.
