Rob Yates may return to the top of the Bears order as Warwickshire head to Sussex looking to maintain their perfect start to the Metro Bank One Day Cup.

The opener was struck on the hand while fielding at Essex last week but an x-ray confirmed he’d not suffered a fracture.

Warwickshire captain Ed Barnard can pick from the same 13-player squad that romped to a comfortable win at Leicestershire last time out.

Barnard claimed four wickets at Grace Road – elevating him top of the competition’s bowling table with six scalps – before Will Rhodes and Hamza Shaikh combined for an 85-run match-winning partnership.

“It was a clinical performance at Leicestershire so we go into this game with lots of confidence,” added Barnard. “It’ll be a tough task but if we could get a result there, starting with three away wins would put us in a very strong position.

“We deserved the win at Grace Road, especially the way we bowled. We’ve got such a good crop of bowlers, lots of seam and spin options. But everyone backed it up.

“And we’ve got more to come: Taz Ali hasn’t had a chance to bowl yet, so we’re excited for him to get into a game. He took a great catch on Friday, fielded well, so that’ll give him lots of confidence.

“We can be a real threat in this competition and hopefully we can make more progress at Sussex before heading to Rugby School.”

The ‘home’ game against Surrey at Rugby (Friday 2 August, 11am start) is the first time in almost a decade that Warwickshire has played a senior game at an out-ground away from Edgbaston.

Around 2,500 tickets have been issued for the game but tickets are still available.
