Warwickshire First Team Coach Mark Robinson is expecting more batting fireworks as his side prepare to face defending Metro Bank One Day Cup holders Leicestershire.

Bears registered their biggest ever winning List A run chase at Essex – overhauling the hosts 324/7 inside 48 overs on Wednesday – to get their 50-over campaign off to a flying start.

Captain Ed Barnard smashed a career best total of 173 – taking his One Day Cup average since the start of last year’s campaign to a whopping 98.6 – in the first of three road trips in five days.

Next up are the Foxes who amassed 369/6 against Nottinghamshire to get the defence of their title off to a dominant start.

Robinson anticipates more heavy run scoring at Grace Road – but says no total will intimidate the Bears batting line-up.

He said: “It shows you what’s possible these days. Big scores and totals like 350 don’t daunt teams like they used to. There’s every chance we’ll be playing on the same high-scoring pitch that Leicestershire used on Wednesday so there could be plenty of runs again.

“The tempo of our response was spot on at Essex. Yatesy got us up and running with some big hitting, Barney joined in and then Will Rhodes and Burgy followed suit.

“It meant there was less pressure on Barney. Hamza missed out but his intention was good. It was a really comfortable chase in the end with Ed taking on his form from last year into this campaign.

“However, we were disappointed with how we bowled. That needs to improve. Barney and Lintott did well but generally there were too many bad balls and we need to address that.

Teenage wicketkeeper-batter Kai Smith has been declared fit to play after six weeks out with a broken hand. He comes into the squad but Che Simmons is still unwell.

Rob Yates (hand) and Michael Burgess (finger) are both in the travelling party but late decisions will be made on their fitness.
