Aussie Glenn Maxwell is set to make his Bears’ debut at Leicester Foxes tomorrow as Mark Robinson’s side look to capitalise on a thrilling Blast Off to their T20 campaign.
Maxwell flew into Birmingham this week following his latest foray in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when he again lit-up the tournament with the kind of destructive, flamboyant cricket that has become his T20 trademark.
Having spent three days gelling with his new teammates – including supporting the Second XI at Barnt Green yesterday – he’s fit and raring to make his mark in this year’s Vitality Blast.
First Team Coach Mark Robinson has no doubts Maxwell will be a fans’ favourite and add an exciting new dimension to his side.
He added: “He’s a proven player in the format, somebody who’s made a career and a reputation playing in an attacking way.
“Fans know what to expect from Maxi but the great thing for us is that he’s very hard for opposition players to work out or set fields for. He brings great qualities to add to what is already a strong squad, so we’re delighted to have him.”
Bears opened their Blast account on Saturday with a solid 31-run win over Yorkshire Vikings at Edgbaston as part of the inaugural Blast Off curtain raiser to the limited overs season.
At one stage the picture was bleak for the Bears. Chris Benjamin walked out with his side on 51/4 – but a thrilling 97-run partnership with Sam Hain saw the Bears reach 200/6 which proved too much for the Vikings.
However, Hassan Ali twisted his ankle in the warm-up to the game and will sit out tomorrow’s trip to the east Midlands while the Edgbaston medical team await the results of a scan.
“All credit to Henry: he wasn’t fazed by the late call-up, was mentally and physically prepared and was on it from the first ball. We’ve seven Blast games in 14 days so it’s important we have a well-prepared squad as players are never far away from the starting eleven.”
Robinson has named a 15-strong squad for the first Blast away game of the season (6.30pm start) at Leicestershire Foxes, with Jacob Bethell, Ed Barnard and Olly Hannon-Dalby in contention alongside the 11 that played against the Vikings.
