Perry looking for Phoenix to move on quickly from Rockets defeat

Ellyse Perry is hoping Birmingham Phoenix can bounce back from an opening day defeat in The Hundred, after her side lost by nine wickets to Trent Rockets at Edgbaston.

The Australian was unable to inspire her side to a competitive total despite top scoring with 39 off 33 balls as Phoenix were dismissed for 65 with five balls of their 100 balls remaining.

Trent Rockets then knocked the runs off quickly, reaching the total one wicket down in 31 balls.

While admitting it was a difficult day for side, Perry says the team will be focusing on the next game rather than reading too much into the result at this early stage of the competition.

“I don't think you can really delve in too much to any of it,” she said. “We just couldn't get a roll of it with the bat and obviously lost lots of wickets early on there.

“It's probably one of those ones where you can just entirely sweep it away and we can just start again.

“You have those games sometimes in franchise cricket, but it's obviously a real shame that it happened for us first up.”

Perry, who is captaining Birmingham Phoenix for the second year, remains positive about the team’s chances in the competition, and it looking forward to the opportunity to respond to today’s result in two days’ time.

“We've had a great week together,” she added. “It's really felt like a team and I absolutely cannot fault any of the girls' efforts or preparation for today.

“It just didn't come together, which is a real shame, but we've got another chance pretty quickly, which is really nice.”

Phoenix Women return to The Hundred on Sunday 26 July, when they travel to Emirates Old Trafford to take on Manchester Super Giants. Play gets under way at 11:00am.
