Jani out to build on match-winning contribution in table-topping clash with Notts

Vansh Jani is looking to build on a stand-out first Rothesay County Championship start of the season when Warwickshire entertain Nottinghamshire in a top-of-the-table clash at Edgbaston.

Jani played a key role in the Bears’ thrilling one-wicket win against Sussex last week, top-scoring with a crucial 62 in the final innings as Warwickshire chased down 203 for victory nine wickets down.

That result maintained the Bears’ title push, keeping them within five points of this week’s visitors Nottinghamshire, and Jani was pleased to be able to contribute in a must-win game.

“It was my first game of the season in the County Championships so it was nice to get a win,” he said. “We’d seen that Notts had won and that Somerset were going to win, so it was important for us to get that win and stay in touch.

“We knew that it was possible to chase 200 down, so it was a great feeling to be able to contribute and help the team get over the line.”

Jani is enjoying a breakout season with the Bears, and recently signed a two-year extension with the Club, keeping him at Edgbaston until at least the end of 2028.

The 21-year-old has notched scores of 66*, 66*, 88, 98 and 62 in his last six games, and he was pleased to carry his 50-over form into red-ball cricket last week.

“I know I have it in me as I've done it over and over again in the Second XI, so it's nice to be able to now transfer it to the First XI,” he said.

“Obviously I personally had a strong finish to the One Day Cup, so it’s nice to also translate that into the red ball game. It's always good to be able to contribute to team wins and with it being my first Championship win for the club, it was very special.”

Jani added that the team are riding high on confidence after last week’s win but are expecting a tough test from a Notts side that had an impressive win of their own last time out.

“It’s a big game that's coming up as they’re just a few points ahead of us.

“Last week was a massive confidence boost, knowing that we can get over a line in a tight game like that.

“The wicket showed here last week that there’s enough in it, so I think patience is the key, in both batting and bowling. You’ve got to be there to score your runs, and on the same spot to get your wickets. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
