How the Women’s Ashes works

The Women’s Ashes Series returns to Edgbaston Stadium in 2027 for the 3rd Metro Bank Women's Ashes ODI taking place on Tuesday 20 July.

A one-off Test is followed by three T20s and three ODIs, with Edgbaston hosting the final game of the series. Here’s how the multi-format contest between England and Australia works…

Schedule

The four-day Test takes place at Headingley from 24-27 June and will kick-start the series with both teams looking to get off to a fast start.

Three T20s will follow in the space of week, with Trent Bridge (3 July), The Kia Oval (6 July) and Emirates Old Trafford (9 July) all host venues.

Following that, three ODIs will likely decide who wins the series. The Utilita Bowl (13 July) and Lord’s (16 July) are the locations for the first two, before Edgbaston hosts the final match of the series.

Point system

Since 2013, the Women’s Ashes has been decided on a points scoring system, and that will be the case again in 2027.

The Test Match carries the most weight in terms of points, with four awarded to the winning team. Should it be a draw, two points are awarded to each team.

T20s and ODIs are all worth two points each, meaning there are 12 points up for grabs from the six white-ball fixtures.

Test Match – 4 points for a win (2 per team for a draw)

ODIs – 2 points for a win

T20s – 2 points for a win

Every point counts

There have been several instances of close finishes in the Women’s Ashes, and none more so than in 2023, when Australia last visited.

Australia were 6-0 up after an 89-run win in the series-opening Test, and a four-wicket win in the first T20 before England fought back.

The hosts would win the two remaining T20s – the first by just three runs - and the first ODI, to level the series at 6-6 with two ODIs remaining.

In the penultimate ODI, a thrilling contest in Southampton saw Australia win by three runs, however England responded in the final ODI, easing to a 69-run win on DLS to tie the series at 8-8.
