Breakout Bears in 2026
Every season brings opportunities for new and existing talent to emerge, and 2026 was no different. From players taking their game to the next level, to younger Bears making their mark in First Class, List A and T20 cricket, a number of individuals enjoyed breakthrough campaigns and showed why they could be key figures for the Club in the years to come.
Vansh Jani

One of Warwickshire’s standout performers in the Metro Bank One Day Cup, Vansh Jani then carried that form into the closing weeks of the Rothesay County Championship season, cementing his place in the middle-order as Warwickshire lifted the trophy.
Fresh from signing a two-year contract extension with the Club, Jani struck a total of 374 runs at an average of 62.33 in the 50-over competition, recording scores of 66 not out, 33, 88 and 98 in consecutive fixtures to end the campaign. He then helped the team over the closing weeks of the red-ball season as the Bears earned a first County Championship crown in five years. At only 21 years old, Jani is an outstanding talent to keep an eye on in the coming years.
Katie George
Katie George (4)
Katie George actually broke through in 2017/18 when she earned her first England caps in both ODIs and T20s, however 2026 saw her breakout with the bat rather than the ball. Having started out as a left-arm opening bowler when first selected to represent the three lions, after returning from injury, George has reshaped her game, working tirelessly on her batting, and she reaped the rewards in 2026.
The right-handed top order batter ended the league stage of the Metro Bank One Day Cup with 698 runs at a staggering average of 77.55 in only 12 starts. Having recorded her maiden List A hundred against Lancashire in June, the 27-year-old soon followed it with another, as well as registering four other 50s in the campaign.
Her performances have seen her named in the 50-over and 4-day England Women A squads for the multi-format series against India A this winter.
Kai Smith

An unbeaten 65 in a successful chase away at Northamptonshire in the final fixture of the 2027 T20 Blast was the start of an impressive second half of the season for Kai Smith.
The 21-year-old showed his qualities with the bat but also ended the year as the Bears’ wicketkeeper in all formats. Behind the stumps and at the crease, he made an impact in the Bears’ title-winning season. He made six appearances in red ball cricket this season, scoring 245 runs at an average just over 40. He’ll be looking to build on that next term.
Charis Pavely
Charis Pavely (6)
In 50-over cricket, Charis Pavely has enjoyed her best season to date. She amassed an outstanding 548 runs across 14 matches in the Metro Bank One Day Cup, striking two centuries and three 50s at an average of 45.66. The two centuries came in consecutive weeks too, as she compiled a maiden century for the Club with a sensational 128 not out, and then followed it up four days later with 127 in a winning effort against Somerset. In a six-game stretch in the competition, she registered scores of 63*, 26, 128*, 127, 55 and 63.
Pavely recently signed a two-year extension with the Club, keeping her at Edgbaston until at least the end of 2028.
Zen Malik
Zen Malik (5)
Arguably one of the best knocks of the 2026 season came from the bat of Zen Malik, when he single-handedly took apart Worcestershire in the Blast at Edgbaston. The Bears v Pears rivalry was settled by the stylish opener, who hit the ball to all parts on his way to a stunning 99 before he was agonisingly dismissed one shy of a deserved hundred.
Malik made 24 appearances across formats for the Bears in 2026 – eight in the County Championship, seven in the One Day Cup and nine in the T20 Blast – making four 50s in the process.
Meg Austin
Meg Austin (6)
What a season it’s been for Meg Austin, particularly with the bat, as she played a crucial role for the side. The numbers show that she’s improving year-on-year, with 2026 her finest year to date, particularly in the 50-over format.
The 22-year-old struck 417 runs in the One Day Cup, at an average of 32.07. To put that into context, Austin’s previous best in a calendar year of 50-over cricket was 99 runs albeit from far fewer starts. Her form in 2026 saw her become a pivotal part of the Bears batting unit, before she recently signed a two-year contract extension which will keep her at Edgbaston until at least the end of 2028.
