Birmingham Phoenix sign Kayla Reyneke as short-term replacement for Fatima Sana

Birmingham Phoenix have signed South African international Kayla Reyneke for the first two fixtures of The Hundred as a short-term replacement for Fatima Sana.

Sana, who will captain Pakistan’s ODI team in their three-match series with Sri Lanka during the first two matches, will return to the Phoenix side for the team’s third game against Southern Brave.

A power-hitting batter and off-spin bowler, Reyneke made her T20 debut for the Proteas in February before getting her first ODI cap the following month.

One of the brightest prospects in world cricket, the 20-year-old made an instant impact for her country, earning two Player-of-the-Match awards in her first four internationals.

Reyneke hit a six off the final ball to win both her first T20I and her first ODI, becoming the only player in the world to have done so to date. She currently boasts a strike rate in excess of 150, one of the highest in the women’s game.

This will be Reyneke’s first appearance in The Hundred.

Birmingham Phoenix Women Head Coach, Ali Maiden, said: “Bringing in a player of the calibre of Kayla at this stage, to help us through those opening two matches, is a real bonus.

“She’s made a big impact for South Africa with both bat and ball since making her debuts in both 50-over and 20-over cricket earlier this year, and I’m excited to see her bring those match-winning qualities to our side.”

Reyneke will be available for selection for Birmingham Phoenix’s opening game of The Hundred against Trent Rockets, which takes place on Friday 24 July at Edgbaston Stadium.
