Bears Women v Yorkshire (h): Metro Bank One Day Cup preview
Warwickshire Bears Women return to Metro Bank One Day Cup action on Wednesday 19 August, with Yorkshire Women the visitors to Edgbaston Stadium.
Here’s everything you need to know before play gets under way at 10:30am…
State of play
With the Vitality Blast and The Hundred taking centre stage, women’s one day cricket is back after an eight-week break.
Bears Women have five games left to play and currently sit fifth in a congested Tier One table after their opening 11 fixtures. While The Blaze and Hampshire Women are clear at the top and have all-but guaranteed first and second place between them, six points separate the next five teams, who are all batting it out to finish third. While the team that finishes top of the table goes straight through to the final, teams in second and third will go head-to-head in an eliminator to keep their chances alive.
Through 11 games, the Bears have amassed 22 points having won five and lost five with one game abandoned due to rain. Prior to the break, they had slipped to successive defeats, so will be bidding to get back to winning ways as 50-over cricket returns.
Opposition insight
Yorkshire have endured a difficult one day competition so far, but could still force their way into contention for third spot with a strong finish to their campaign. They have six games to play, and should they win out, they would be in the mix.
Through ten games, they have three wins, however they are one of only two teams to beat table-topping The Blaze. Their 70-run win over the Hampshire-based outfit back in April proved that they are capable of beating any team on their day. With a win against the Bears, Yorkshire could climb from eighth to sixth in the table.
Last meeting
The two teams met for the first time this season at the start of May, with the Bears edging a thrilling encounter by three wickets with 16 balls remaining at Scarborough.
Jess Jonassen’s 102-ball 110 helped to power Yorkshire to 238 all out with the Bears wickets shared between Georgia Davis (3-43), Hannah Baker (3-45), Mary Taylor (2-53) and Phoebe Brett (2-31).
In reply, several players contributed for the Bears in a compelling chase. Amu Surenkumar (45) and Meg Austin (30) scored runs at the top of the order before the Bears were reduced to 85 for four. A 93-run stand between Abi Freeborn (36) and Chloe Brewer (56) then put the Bears back in the driving seat, before Nat Wraith’s 20 and an unbeaten 22 from Mary Taylor saw the Bears over the line in the 48th over.
