Bears appoint Jim Troughton as Men’s Batting Coach

Jim Troughton will renew his long association with Warwickshire County Cricket Club after being appointed Men’s Batting Coach.

The former Bears’ captain will re-join the Club from Surrey at the end of the season to replace the departing Matt Walker, who will become Sussex’s new Head Coach ahead of the 2027 season.

Troughton, whose first association with the Bears spanned three decades, initially joined the Club as an 11-year-old and progressed through the Warwickshire pathway to make his First Class debut in 2001.

He went on to make over 400 appearances for the Bears across formats, scoring over 14,000 runs in the process. He was part of the side which won the 2002 Benson & Hedges Cup, 2004 County Championship and the 2010 CB40, before leading the Club to their seventh County Championship title in 2012 as Captain.

He retired in 2014 due to a long-term back condition, and was appointed Bears’ first team coach ahead of the 2017 season, leading the Club to promotion from Division Two the following year, before leaving his role in 2020.

Troughton went on to join the Somerset coaching staff in 2021, before moving to Surrey in 2022. During his time as Assistant Coach at The Oval, Surrey won three consecutive County Championship titles from 2022-2024.

“Jim stood out as someone who can bring a high level of batting expertise while complementing the strengths already within our staff group. He knows the Club and many of the players well and brings real energy and clarity to his coaching.

“His passion for batting, player development and Warwickshire came through very strongly, and we are excited about the contribution he will make to the players and the wider coaching team.

“Walks will be a difficult man to replace. The players have loved working with him, and I’ve always valued his support and experience. He’s someone who is held in the highest regard across the club, and I’m sure Jim will be no different in what he will bring to the group.”
