Barnard proud of ‘relentless’ team effort as Bears topple Glamorgan

Warwickshire County Cricket Club captain, Ed Barnard, praised the relentless nature of his side after they blew away Glamorgan inside two days to continue their Rothesay County Championship title charge in emphatic fashion.

The Bears dismissed hosts Glamorgan for 69 and 65 respectively, while racking up 391 runs when they had the opportunity to bat at Sophia Gardens, resulting in victory by an innings and 257 runs.

Barnard’s side have been in outstanding form since four-day cricket returned, winning three and drawing one of their four games, with the last two victories taking just five days.

Following Ethan Bamber’s five-wicket haul in the first innings, Barnard himself replicated that feat in the second, taking five for 13 from 6.1 overs as the Bears dismissed Glamorgan within 27 overs.

“It was pretty remarkable in the end,” he said. “For it to happen that quickly just shows how well the boys bowled.

“I think it’s hard to judge the opposition but we were relentless, and I think our three batters got through a tricky period to then allow us to have a nice platform and everyone scored well.

“From a personal perspective it was nice to get some rewards. I think I’ve bowled well all year.”

The result sees Warwickshire move temporarily top of the Division One table with both Somerset and Nottinghamshire yet to complete their fixtures against Leicestershire and Hampshire respectively.

With a trip to take on Essex next week before they take on Leicestershire at Edgbaston Stadium in the final game of the season, Barnard is trying not to get too carried away with his team firmly in contention.

“It feels really exciting [to be top],” he added. “We’re trying not to think about it too much and there’s obviously two massive games to go.”

“We’ve got a great attack with a great spinner. We’re in a fortunate place at the moment.”

The penultimate round of Rothesay County Championship fixtures sees Warwickshire travel to Chelmsford to take on Essex. Play gets under way at 10:30am.
