Get ready for…Phoenix v Welsh Fire

Birmingham Phoenix are back at Edgbaston Stadium as both the men’s and women’s teams get ready to take on Welsh Fire.

Four teams packed full of some of the best players in the world clash on Saturday 1 August, with the women’s game starting at 11:00am before the men meet at 2:30pm.

Phoenix form

Phoenix Women have struggled to get their The Hundred competition going, losing twice and having their third game washed out by rain. They have plenty of fire power at the top of the order though, and pace and spin options with the ball, so expect them to respond here.

Phoenix Men beat Trent Rockets by ten runs in a high-scoring thriller on the opening night, before losing against an inspired Manchester Super Giants. Against Welsh Fire, they ended two sixes short in a low-scoring game in Southampton. They too will be hoping to return to winning ways on home soil.

Phoenix stars to watch

Davina Perrin

Despite falling to defeat last time out, Davina Perrin starred with the bat for the Phoenix. She showed her destructive qualities by hitting 52 runs off 43 balls. She’ll be looking to build on that against Welsh Fire.

Usman Tariq

Tariq showcased all of his variations in the team’s last outing against Welsh Fire, going for just 17 runs from his 20 balls. He’s a magician with the ball, and showed all of those qualities for Warwickshire Bears in the Blast. He’ll enjoy being back at Edgbaston.

The opposition

Welsh Fire Women have won one and lost two of their first three matches. They narrowly lost to Southern Brave in their first match before responding with a dominant 60 run win against MI London. In their last game on Wednesday they fell to an eight wicket defeat against Trent Rockets.
