Davis praises Bears Women “history makers”

Georgia Davis has thanked her “history making” Bears Women players for their backing in the early stages of her captaincy after an impressive start to their debut season.

Davis has guided her side to two wins and a draw from their opening four games and third in the Metro Bank Women’s One Day Cup standings.

The latest success saw Bears Women complete a historic high List A run chase in women’s English domestic cricket as they overhauled Surrey women’s 313/7 inside 46 overs on Sunday.

Davis – who’s taken seven wickets in four games – said she’s enjoying the responsibility of being skipper.

“I’ve loved it so far and that’s largely because the girls are doing such a fantastic job,” said the 25-year-old.

“Their backing has helped me out massively. I know I can turn to anyone in the team and they will do a great job, it’s so reassuring to have that support and likewise they know I’ve got their backs. We have a real belief in the side.

“It was great fun to be part of, stressful at times as it was a big score on the board. But it was a good pitch, like batting on the M25, so we knew there were runs for us as well.

“Even at the interval we knew we were still in the game because 350 was probably about par. We actually did really well as a bowling group to restrict them to 313.”

Bears Women fell to 59/3 early in the mammoth chase but a 114-run partnership between Davina Perrin and Nat Wraith, followed by Ellis’ unbeaten 63, set up the landmark win.

Davis added: “We lost three early wickets so it was a tough start but we were always above the run rate. It was really good to see how positive the girls were right from the off; we trusted in ourselves.

“When Nat Wraith and Bellis (Behan Ellis) were going well in the middle of the innings we thought it was going to be our day. They made it look really easy and didn’t really look in danger. They played some strong shots and it put us in a very good position.
