Currie frustrated by Fire defeat

Scott Currie believes Birmingham Phoenix can still turn their campaign around despite falling to a seven-wicket defeat at home to Welsh Fire this afternoon.

Phoenix posted a below par tally of 137/9 from their 100 balls before Fire, led by Joe Root’s composed 58*, secured victory at Edgbaston Stadium.

Currie believes Phoenix fell short with the bat, which ultimately led to them being unable to defend their total.

“Probably didn’t think we had enough, truth be told. We felt we’d fallen 40 runs short. We were probably lured in by the other night, where we got over 200, we thought maybe we could get something similar, but obviously that wasn’t the case. I don’t know if the day game affected it, maybe if it had been an evening game it might have been different.

“You do get lured in here, because it’s 54 metres one way and only 65 the other. It’s something that does get spoken about, you don’t want to just get boundary-happy. Joe Root proved that, he knocked it around mainly and picked up a four every now and then.

“You have to keep believing. We’re at the halfway point now, but we’ve got it all to do. Three games come quite quickly next week, so we’ll have to pull our fingers out and hopefully get some wins on the board.”
