Second XI - T20 Final winners
Bears Second XI impress on Finals Day to lift second successive T20 Cup
Warwickshire Bears Second XI are T20 Cup champions for the second year in a row after beating Nottinghamshire by 27 runs in the Final at Wormsley Cricket Ground.
The Bears, who had beaten Northamptonshire in a nail-biting one-run victory earlier in the day to set up the final with Notts, produced with both bat and ball in the Final to make sure of a second successive T20 title.
Telling contributions from Vansh Jani (39) and captain Hamza Shaikh (55), and a late cameo from Theo Wylie (27) helped the Bears reach 180 for six from their 20 overs, before Olly Hannon-Dalby, who took three for 24, Nathan Gilchrist (two for 36) and Taz Ali (two for 23) saw the Bears bowl Notts out for 153 in the 18th over to seal a 27-run win.
Warwickshire batted first in the Final, with Jani getting the Bears off to a flyer, hitting 39 off just 12 balls, in an innings that included three fours and four sixes.
His opening stand of 51 with Omaris Khan came to an end when Khan was dismissed for nine, before two further wickets fell in quick succession, including that of Jani.
Shaikh and George Garton rebuilt, putting on 51 for the fourth wicket before Garton was strangled down the leg-side for 28.
Shaikh continued to play fluently though and notched the first 50 of Finals Day in impression fashion before he was dismissed for 55 off 43 balls, while Theo Wylie added an unbeaten 27 to boost the total to 180 for six after 20 overs.
Hannon-Dalby struck second ball of Notts’ reply, with Khan taking a smart catch at first slip, and Hannon-Dalby added a second wicket in his next over. Nathan Gilchrist, who took three wickets in the Bears’ semi-final win, also picked up an early wicket, as the Outlaws were reduced to 28 for three.
Travis Holland and Joe Pocklington then counter-attacked for Notts in a 72-run fourth wicket stand, before Wylie produced a brilliant run out off his own bowling to dismiss Pocklington for 31, as Notts reached 100 at the halfway stage of their chase.
In the next over, Che Simmons was introduced into the attack and picked up the key wicket of Holland for 48 with a sharp caught and bowled chance.
With the partnership broken, Ali picked up two wickets, trapping both Farham Ahmed Byron Hatton-Lowe leg before wicket, however Robert Lord (16) and Dillon Pennington (25) momentarily threatened to produce another Notts fightback.
Eight down, Gilchrist returned to the attack, taking the wicket of Lord, before Hannon-Dalby picked up the final Notts wicket to make sure the Bears retained their T20 title.
