Allan Lamb spat in the face of cricketing history when he chose to bat. History exacted the customary penalty, as Warwickshire became the tenth team in succession to win batting second. Despite an apparently sound pitch, the Northamptonshire batsmen struggled, Lamb exemplifying this lasting only three deliveries. Bad light halted play at 197 for eight with nine balls of the first innings remaining. On a bright Sunday morning all presumed that a Warwickshire win was a formality. Chasing 197, Warwickshire stood at 74 for four, Twose surviving three dropped catches. Northamptonshire may have won had umpire Bird shared the majority opinion that Reeve was out lbw to Kumble in the 52nd over. Reeve, a great one-day improviser, rode his luck, kick-starting a surge towards victory. His 37 not out gave Warwickshire the win and Reeve yet another Nat West Trophy Man of the Match award.
