Varun Chopra
BORN: 21/06/87, Barking
ROLE: Right-hand bat; Right-arm offbreak
BEST TWENTY20 PERFORMANCE: 51 v Middlesex Panthers at Lord’s, 26/06/09
A gifted top-order batsman who joined Warwickshire from Essex for the start of this season, Chopra has long been identified as a future star in the making. A former England under 19 captain, his upright stance and precise footwork are the hallmarks of someone who thinks deeply about his technique and many feel it is only a matter of time before he delivers the breakthrough innings that takes his game to the next level. Having featured in only 12 Twenty20 matches before the start of this season’s competition he is clearly still finding his way in the format, but his record in 50 and 40-over cricket – 1,179 runs at an average of 38.03 including two centuries – indicate that he is very much at home against the white ball. Watch this space, this could be his big season.
