Paul Best
BORN: 08/03/91, Nuneaton
ROLE: Slow left-arm orthodox; Left-hand bat
BEST TWENTY20 PERFORMANCE: N/A
An accurate left-arm spinner who has drawn comparisons with Daniel Vettori, Best was a member of the England under 19 squad that competed in the recent World Cup out in New Zealand and has impressed Second XI Coach Dougie Brown with his assured leadership of the Warwickshire second team since first taking on the role last season. He’s yet to make his first team bow but all indications are that this assured and intelligent bowler will have a bright future in the game. Should either of Imran Tahir or Ant Botha pull up injured, Ian Westwood and Ashley Giles can rest assured they have a worthy replacement waiting in the wings.
Do you enjoy the Twenty20 format?
Yes, I think it’s certainly very exciting, it’s a good brand of cricket. It brings out a good audience as well.
What does it take to be successful in Twenty20 cricket?
You need batsmen who can hit the ball out of the ground, bowlers who can bowl yorkers or slower balls and really strong fielders.
What’s the atmosphere like at Edgbaston during Twenty20 matches?
It’s pretty enthusiastic, exciting, bit of a party atmosphere.
Can you name three famous pirates (Johnny Depp doesn’t count)?
Ok, Blackbeard, Redbeard? (laughs). Long John Silver and Sir Francis Drake.
How many of the seven seas have you been to?
I’ve been to the Atlantic, the Indian, and I think that’s about it. So I’ve been to two of the seven seas.
