Pirates Invade Royal Mail

The Royal Mail Staff pose with the BRMB Thunders

A seemingly ordinary day at the office turned out to be anything but for workers at Royal Mail in Sutton Coldfield yesterday after they were captured by pirates – all in the name of cricket!

To celebrate this year’s Friends Provident t20 season, Warwickshire County Cricket Club (WCCC) has launched a series of money-can’t-buy ‘Pirate Invasion’ competitions. Open to businesses across the West Midlands region, workers from four lucky organisations can win the chance to get ‘hijacked’ from their workplace by the pirate-clad BRMB Thunders and shipped to Edgbaston to watch a t20 match. Some 25 workers from Royal Mail were the first lucky winners to be captured where they witnessed The Bears’ Jim Troughton and Darren Maddy, amongst others, trounce the Northants Steelbacks, on Thursday 3 June.

Dan Whitehouse, postman at Royal Mail, said: “I have enjoyed cricket for as long as I can remember and particularly enjoy the t20 games as they are fast-paced and really exciting to watch so when I heard about the ‘Pirate Invasion’ competition I knew I had to enter.

“All I did was fill out my details online, it was easy as that! To say I was surprised to learn I’d won is an understatement and I’m revelling in being the most popular postie at work!”

James McLaughlin, commercial director at WCCC, said: “t20 cricket enables spectators to watch truly spectacular sportsmen play exciting, up-tempo cricket. This is why, as predicted, the ‘Pirate Invasion’ competitions have caused quite a stir and why we have been inundated with entries.

“The staff from Royal Mail had a great time at Edgbaston and if you would like to follow in their footsteps, make sure you enter the competition while you still have the chance.”
