DAY 3

With an overnight lead of one hundred and seventy three, Lancashire lost wickets at regular intervals on the third morning with Boyd Rankin and Chris Woakes picking up five wickets in the session as the Lancashire innings closed half an hour before the interval on 189, leaving Warwickshire a target of 245 for victory from a little over five possible sessions of play.

Porterfield went before lunch and Bell immediately afterwards and despite some spirited batting from Trott 39 and Chopra 29, once they had gone to the spin of Keedy and Kerrigan, the innings collapsed in just over thirty overs as Kerrigan 5-7 and Keedy 3-2 destroyed the Bears’ outside hopes of an unlikely victory.

97 all out and beaten by 147 runs, Warwickshire now have two wins and two defeats from their opening four Championship games.

DAY 2

Resuming on 39-1 the Bears' top and middle order folded against some lateral movement and uneven bounce on the second morning, as Lancashire grabbed the initiative taking six wickets in the session.

Varun Chopra 21 was lbw to Chapple's first delivery of the morning and Jonathan Trott 9, then edged Chapple to Moore at slip with the ball moving off the seam and conditions extremely difficult for the batsmen.

Ian Bell 33 had looked solid until the introduction of Simon Kerrington's spin saw him edge to Cross, before Luke Procter claimed three wickets in the half hour before lunch Clarke 0, bowlingYousaf 26 and then in the last over of the session having Woakes 4 caught by Cross as the Bears went to lunch on 106-7 still trailing by 121 runs on first innings.

Ambrose 43 and Barker 25 attacked the Lancashire bowlers after lunch but after Ambrose was lbw to Anderson, the tail fell away and Warwickshire were dismissed for one hundred and seventy two runs.

Lancashire started their second innings poorly, Horton 3 was well caught down the leg side by Ambrose off Woakes and both Moore and Brown were lbw as the visitors slipped to 27-3 before a useful partnership of sixty one for the fourth wicket ended when Woakes removed Chilton lbw for twenty three.

This was to be the final succes of the day for the Bears as Croft reached his half century just before the close after he had been dropped off some straight forward chances and with an overall lead of 173 and six wickets in hand Lancashire closed the day in a strong position.

DAY 1

Warwickshire made four changes to the side that lost to Durham with Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott, Keith Barker and Maurice Holmes on debut coming in.

Ian Bell skippered in place of the injured Jim Troughton and after losing the toss saw his side collect an early wicket when Horton 7, edged Woakes to Ambrose.

Rikki Clarke then struck, bowling Brown 13, off stump, but these were to be the only successes of the session as Lancashire went to lunch on 94-2 with Moore 45 and Chilton 20.

After lunch, Clarke caught Chilton 24 at slip off Woakes and when Croft padded up to Clarke offering no shot, Lancashire were 104-4 and it worsened for the visitors as Moore having completed his half century was trapped lbw by Rankin for sixty seven.

Luke Procter and Gareth Cross battled hard for the remainder of the afternoon session, taking their side to tea on 196-5.

When play resumed in the evening session, Rankin had Procter caught at slip by Clarke for forty six and then Cross played on from Clarke for forty four.

Boyd Rankin then wrapped the innings up taking the last three wickets in an over as Lancashire closed on 227.

In reply Anderson had Porterfield lbw for two in the time left in the day.
