Eoin Morgan asserted that Ben Stokes’s potential is “through the roof” after the Durham all-rounder’s unbeaten century powered England to victory over Australia.

The crowd here has been brilliant for us for the last couple of years

And captain Morgan also saluted the “brilliant” Edgbaston crowd after a ground ODI record 24,227 cranked up a carnival atmosphere while Stokes was stroking England to a victory which sends them towards their ICC Champions Trophy semi-final on Thursday full of confidence and momentum.

“The crowd here has been brilliant for us for the last couple of years,” he said. “They really get behind us but there is nothing malicious, they just come here to have a good time and hopefully they all had a good day today.

“Stokesy played brilliantly. His potential is through the roof. He always wants to be involved in the game. He bowled two of the hardest overs in their innings, his batting was exceptional and even in the field he is always looking to influence the game. He did loads of great work at mid-on.

Of course @edgbaston lived up to expectations as always! Best ground in the country! England lads love playing there! Great atmosphere ??

“As a team I think we are improving game by game, especially in bowling. Our bowlers are looking in form now and we have shown we can peg sides back in that last 15-over period of innings which two years ago was a bit of a car-crash for us.”
