The 53rd one-day final was widely regarded as the greatest ever played. Off the last ball, Warwickshire overhauled the Sussex total of 321 for six, the highest score in a Cup final. The result has to be judged in the context of poor Sussex fielding and some unimaginative captaincy by Wells, but the magnificence of the victory and the thrilling nature of the cricket was beyond dispute. David Smith accumulated a superb 124, the backbone of the innings, leaving the fielders demoralised. The task looked hopeless, but the aggressive strokeplay of Smith, Asif Din's wristy improvisation and Reeve's heroics caused the Sussex bowlers and fielders to haemorrhage runs. With two overs left 20 runs were needed. In the penultimate over Giddins conceded just fiveand had Asif Din caught at deep cover. Fifteen runs were required off six balls. Reeve eked 13 from the first five and Twose, facing his first and last ball, sliced it through the close off-side field to give Warwickshire victory. Asif Din was duly awarded the Man of the Match with his crucial 104 runs from a mere 106 balls.
