Warwickshire defeated Middlesex, the holders, by 4 wickets and with three balls to spare. An exciting and, in its way, story book finish was the pinnacle of a match in which tight bowling, tigerish fielding and a slow pitch combined to limit stroke play. Haynes' pre-lunch 50 and the experience of Downton and Emburey, saw Middlesex past the 200 mark, not a large total but one that they defended with miserly control. In reply a crucial partnership between Reeve and Asid Din of 69 in 15 overs enabled the Bears to get within sniffing distance of the target. Ultimately it was left to the inexperienced Neil Smith, who required 9 from Simon Hughes' last 5 deliveries. He clubbed the first of these balls over long-off for the only six of the game. Hughes, trying to contain him, conceded a leg-side wide two deliveries later, whereupon Smith, son of the former England captain, straight-drove the next ball for the winning runs. For his all-round contribution, Dermot Reeve was awarded the Man of the Match award for the second time in his career.
