Nick Knight took over the captaincy of the side for the 2004 season and in his own words believed the side were two or three years away from challenging for the title.
After drawing their opening two matches a home victory over Surrey saw the start of a run of four wins in five matches, taking them to the top of the table, a position they were to hold throughout the remainder of an unbeaten summer.
Knight had a phenomenal run of success with the toss winning thirteen out of sixteen and the talented Warwickshire batsmen took full advantage, registering eleven first innings scores in excess of 400 with ten coming in consecutive matches.
The partnership of Warwickshire's Director of Coaching, John Inverarity and Nick Knight provided the stimulus for some outstanding individual performances during the season.
Knight scored 303* at Lords and Ian Bell wrote himself into the record books as the county's youngest double centurion with 262* at Horsham against Sussex, whilst also making a further five centuries in the campaign.
In all the Warwickshire batsmen scored nineteen centuries spread over nine individual batsmen with Dougie Brown scoring three and Michael Powell, Nick Knight and Mark Wagh two each.
To complement this, forty nine half centuries were scored as the side amassed almost ten thousand runs at an average of over forty eight runs per wicket.
Heath Streak took thirteen wickets in his debut match against Northamptonshire at Edgbaston and Dougie Brown twice had five wicket hauls towards the end of what was generally a batting dominated season.
The sixth County Championship win was secured off the field as Sussex failed to gain an essential victory over Middlesex leaving Warwickshire to play their final match of the season at Northampton already assured of the title.
