The 1994 Championship Team

Warwickshire re-wrote the record books in 1994 when they became the only side in history to win three of the four domestic trophies in a truly remarkable season only failing to clinch a complete "Grand Slam" when they lost in the NatWest Trophy final at Lord's. The mercurial Dermot Reeve led the side that claimed the County Championship for only the fourth time in the Club's history, although steadfast, vice-Captain, Tim Munton, ably supported his leadership. During the nine Championship games Munton deputised for injured skipper Reeve, he led the side to eight wins and, in turn, to the top of the County table. Warwickshire's new overseas signing, the West Indian batsman, Brian Lara made a huge contribution scoring 2066 runs in the season and making world history by scoring 501* against Durham at Edgbaston on June 6th. It was, however, the total commitment and self-belief of the entire squad that was a feature of the season. In many respects 1994 was a culmination of a cricket philosophy that had started back in 1991, when Director of Coaching, Bob Woolmer introduced new and interesting coaching and practice techniques, a new attitude of mind and sought to remove the fear of failure from the minds of his players.
