The 1972 Championship Team

In a reduced fixture list only Rohan Kanhai, 1437 runs (average 59.87) and Dennis Amiss, 1129 runs (average 66.41) surpassed 1000 runs, but Alvin Kallicharran averaged 41.41 for his 994 runs and MJK Smith scored 743 (average 41.27). Skipper AC Smith gave up wicket-keeping during the season and actually topped the bowling averages with 20 wickets (average 22.45). The main bowlers were Norman McVicker, whose seamers brought him 63 wickets (average 23.74) and West Indian Lance Gibbs, who captured 50 wickets (average 26.48) in his farewell season.
