The 1951 Championship Team

Skipper "Tom" Dollery was an inspiration with his positive and unselfish leadership, 1491 runs (average 41.41) and fine fielding. Four other batsmen exceeded 1000 runs in the championship with wicket-keeper Dick Spooner leading the way with 1767 runs (average 43.09). Stolid opener Fred Gardner scored 1338 (average 31.85), veteran Jimmie Ord (average 31.21) and Bert Wolton, apart from fielding delightfully, scored 1011 (average 30.63). Eric Hollies led the bowling with 145 wickets at 17.69 runs apiece, New Zealander fast bowler Tom Pritchard took 93 (average 21.65) and veteran seamer, Charlie Grove, chose this season - his benefit year - to bag his first 100 wicket return, finishing with 103 (average 18.78). The main support for these three came from Ray Weeks, a young Cornish left armed spinner, whose return of 68 wickets at 23.38 indicated promise which unfortunately was never realised. The tenth regular member of the team was Alan Townsend whose 789 runs, 21 wickets and 41 catches demonstrated his all-round value.
