World Champion Sanga set for Edgbaston return
He may have retired from International T20s following Sunday’s victorious ICC World T20 Final, but cricket fans still have the chance to see former Bear Kumar Sangakkara at Edgbaston, when he returns for Sri Lanka’s Royal London ODI against England on 3 June.
Sanga was awarded Man of the Match for his unbeaten 52 off just 35 balls in Sunday’s ICC World T20 Final, which helped Sri Lanka to a six wicket victory over India.
He spent the first half of the 2007 season at Edgbaston as the Bears’ overseas player, scoring 496 First Class runs at an average of nearly 50, as well as 349 one-day runs and an average of just under 35, including a century against local rivals Worcestershire at New Road.
Speaking to the Birmingham Mail last year, Sanga said: “My season for Warwickshire was one of the best years of my life as a cricketer and a person. I will treasure my time as a Bear, not just for the moments on the field, but more for our time together in the dressing room, talking over a coffee, exchanging thoughts and ideas and becoming friends.
“I believe I improved enormously, both technically and in character, as a result of the influence of the Warwickshire team and dressing room.”
Sanga has now played for Sri Lanka in 122 Tests, 369 ODIs and is ranked number two and five in the respective ICC World Rankings for batsman. He also holds a world record for the number of stumpings in ODI cricket, having made 88 to date.
He has is expected to be joined by fellow Sri Lankan cricket legends Mahela Jayawardene and Lasith Malinga when Sri Lanka take on England in the Royal London ODI at Edgbaston on Tuesday 3 June.
