Rankin makes Test debut
Warwickshire’s Boyd Rankin became the 32nd Bear to be awarded a Test Match cap overnight after making his debut in England’s fifth and final Ashes Test of the winter tour to Australia.
Rankin (29) had already won five ODI and two t20 International caps for England, and named in England’s XI to take on Australia along with fellow debutants, Scott Borthwick of Durham and Gary Balance of Yorkshire.
The day proved bittersweet for Rankin after he was forced to leave the field on two occasions, which the ECB would subsequently confirm was due to cramp following a scan. He finished the day with figures of 32 runs for no wicket of 8.2 overs as England closed the day on 8-1 in reply to Australia’s 326 all out.
