Woakes signs two-year contract extension with Warwickshire

Warwickshire and England all-rounder Chris Woakes has underlined his commitment to his home county by signing a new two-year contract extension, which runs until the end of the 2016 season.

Birmingham-born Woakes (24) is a product of Warwickshire’s development programme and joined the Club as an 11 year-old. He graduated from the Club’s Academy to make his First Class debut in 2006 and has now scored 3,386 runs – including seven centuries – and taken 290 wickets in First Class Cricket.

Having established himself as one of the leading all-rounders on the county circuit, Woakes made his Test Match debut last summer in England’s Fifth Test of the Investec Ashes Series against Australia at The Oval. He has also won 13 ODI and four IT20 caps.

Commenting on his new deal, Chris said: “I’ve now been with Warwickshire for 13 years and am a proud Bear, so the opportunity to extend my contract was something that I was very keen to do.

“We’ve got a great set-up at Edgbaston, with fantastic supporters, facilities, coaching team and an incredibly strong Warwickshire squad that can compete for silverware in all competitions. We’re all working hard in pre-season training and are looking forward to the challenges of 2014.”

Woakes departs for Australia today to join up with Big Bash team Sydney Thunder on a short-term deal, where he will feature in games against Sydney Sixers on December 21st and Adelaide Strikers on December 27th.

Dougie Brown, Warwickshire’s Director of Cricket, said: “Chris has proved himself as an outstanding cricketer who can change the outcome of a match with bat and ball. His performance against Derbyshire in the LV= County Championship last season was a great example of this, where his unbeaten 152 set-up a great position to force a win.

“Whilst he is an experienced member of the squad who has represented England in all formats of the game, he’s still only 24 and we expect his best days to be ahead of him. We’re delighted that those years will be spent here at Edgbaston.”

Woakes is one of 19 members of Warwickshire’s Academy programme who has won a professional contract with the Bears, with Pete McKay, Tom Lewis and Jon Webb being the latest players to graduate to the professional ranks last month.
