Porterfield leads Ireland to crushing win over USA
Warwickshire William Porterfield scored the first ever Twenty 20 International Century by an Irishman earlier this morning as he smashed 127 not out from just 69 balls.
Captaining Ireland in their fourth match of the ICC World t20 qualifying tournament in Abu Dhabi, Porterfield’s innings lasted the full twenty overs and he was well supported, firstly by Paul Stirling with 25, Kevin O’Brien with 18 and very strongly towards the end of the innings by John Mooney who smashed 32 not out from just 13 balls.
Ireland finished with 216 for 3 from their 20 overs which is their highest ever total in a Twenty 20 International.
Although the USA got off to a fine start and were ahead of Ireland’s total at the end of the 4th over as they moved to 44 for 1, Ireland’s spin twins George Dockrell and Paul Stirling strangled the Americans chase as the ever increasing required run-rate led to wickets falling regularly. Stirling finished with 3 wickets, whilst Dockrell, Sorensen and Mooney each took two wickets as Ireland cruised to a comprehensive 75 run victory.
Next up tomorrow for Porterfield’s Ireland is Italy in Abu Dhabi again at 6am GMT.
