Edgbaston Head Groundsman Named as a Finalist in the IOG Awards

Edgbaston Head Groundsman Gary Barwell has been shortlisted for the Institute of Groundsmanship’s (IOG) Professional Cricket Groundsman of the Year Award.

Gary, who has been Head Groundsman at Edgbaston for two years, is responsible for the outfield and preparation of the pitches for all domestic and Major Match Days at Edgbaston. He manages Edgbaston’s six-man team of ground staff and also is tasked with the preparation and maintenance of Edgbaston’s two international-standard net facilities and preparation of pitches at the Club’s outgrounds.

The award criteria includes information on Gary’s main responsibilities and available resources, his maintenance of machinery, his standard of pitch presentation and examples of his passion for the job and his ability to manage difficult situations.

Colin Povey, Chief Executive of Edgbaston, said: “Gary and his team work tirelessly throughout the year and were rightly referred to as heroes by the cricket media in June after they miraculously overcame the elements to secure play in the ICC Champions Trophy Final; an event that was watched by millions of people around the world.

“He’s very highly thought of by Dougie Brown and the playing and coaching team at Edgbaston and we’re very proud of his nomination for this prestigious award.”

Now in their fifth year, the IOG Awards acknowledge the high standards achieved by volunteer and professional teams and individuals at facilities that range from grassroots through to professional stadia level.

The awards’ judging process recognises achievement, innovation and fresh thinking as well as examples of best practice from the leaders in the world of groundsmanship.

IOG CEO Geoff Webb says: “The aim of these awards is to recognise groundsmanship at individual, team and management levels and their invaluable contribution to the world of sport.

“Our judges are all practising groundsman working both at a professional and amateur level. Since launching five years ago the awards have gone from strength to strength and we acknowledge the high standards of all nominated this year.”

The successful winners will be announced Oscar-style at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry on Thursday, December 5.
